How to use your VA benefits at Nexford

Six steps from VA approval to enrollment certification. The VA handles eligibility — Nexford handles the certification. Here's exactly how the two connect.
NUMBER 1_ICON_YELLOW
Apply for VA education benefits at VA.gov

The VA's online portal routes you automatically to the correct form for your benefit type — no separate paper form required. Once your application is approved, you'll receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or VA authorization letter. Keep it, you'll need it for Step 4.

Apply at VA.gov →

NUMBER 2_ICON_YELLOW
Apply to Nexford and select a VA-eligible program

Submit your Nexford application and choose one of the approved programs listed above. Your admission decision and your VA benefit eligibility are separate processes — both can run in parallel.

Start your Nexford application →

NUMBER 3_ICON_YELLOW
Enroll and confirm your start date
Once admitted, enroll in your chosen program and confirm your cohort start date. Note your enrollment dates — your SCO will need them when submitting your certification to the VA.
NUMBER 4_ICON_YELLOW
Submit your documents to Nexford's School Certifying Official
Email the following to va@nexford.edu:
  • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or VA authorization letter
  • DD-214 (if applicable)
  • Any additional documentation required by your benefit type
NUMBER 5_ICON_YELLOW
Nexford certifies your enrollment with the VA
Our SCO submits your enrollment certification to the VA on your behalf. Depending on your benefit type, benefits are paid either directly to Nexford or directly to you. Any remaining tuition balance not covered by your benefits is your responsibility.
NUMBER 6_ICON_YELLOW
Monitor your enrollment each term
Remain enrolled in approved courses, meet Nexford's academic progress requirements, and report any changes — including withdrawals or course load changes — to the SCO promptly. Depending on your benefit type, you may also need to verify your enrollment directly with the VA each month.

VA forms by benefit type

Apply online at VA.gov — the portal automatically routes you to the correct form for your benefit type. If you prefer to apply by paper, use the reference below.

Transferring your VA benefits to Nexford

If you've previously used VA education benefits at another institution, you'll need to update your benefit with the VA before enrolling at Nexford. The fastest route is through the VA's online portal.

Once processed, you'll receive an updated Certificate of Eligibility — submit it to our School Certifying Official at va@nexford.edu.

Prefer paper? Submit VA Form 22-1995 (Request for Change of Program or Place of Training).

Transfer credit evaluation

Nexford evaluates prior coursework for all learners using VA education benefits. Official transcripts are required — applicable transfer credit will be awarded where appropriate, and may shorten the length of your program.
Important for VA learners
You may not receive VA education benefits for courses where transfer credit has already been awarded. Enrollment certifications are only submitted to the VA after the credit evaluation is complete — this step protects against potential overpayments and is required.

To begin: have your official transcripts sent directly to Nexford's Registrar's Office at registrar@nexford.edu. Do not send transcripts to the SCO inbox — they must go to the Registrar to begin the evaluation.
